Koh Samui - Free&Easy Ride (Part 6 - End)

29-May-2016

7:45am, all of us gathered around the carpark, and ready to depart back to Malaysia. As usual, after some briefing, we start our journey. One thing great about Thailand is, their security guard and also the hotel management is very tourist friendly, and they treat their guests with the best. The security guard even help us stopping the traffic in order for us to go out from the hotel, suddenly make us feel like VIP.

Reached the jetty around 9:30am, and the next ferry available at 10:00am. With the same price, 230 Baht, we are ready to headed back to mainland. Some delay during our departure, as one of the bike battery depleted...

Finally, reached back Malaysia border around 7:00pm (Malaysia time)

Nothing much write up on the trip back, as me myself was exhausted.
Try to view the video below for the Koh Samui, part 2.

Koh Samui - Free&Easy Ride (Part 5)

28-May-2016

The next morning in Koh Samui, 5 of us decided to head to the beautiful beach in the morning, the water is clear, and spend almost 4 hrs at the beach (including 1hrs of massage at the beach, but will not recommend to any, as the massage is not really good).

There is one nice looking Japanese chic, holiday with her couple, and to make myself not so pervert looking guy, sorry, no photo....

Went back to hotel around 1:00pm, and after cleaning ourself, decided to join few others for island tour...
We went to Big buddha, huge Guan Yu statue, red bricks watt siam, and not to forget the famous grandpa and grandma rock at lamai beach...

After the island tour, we reached back hotel around 7:00pm, and decided to head for dinner.
Done the dinner, back to hotel, decided jump into the swimming pool....
Supposedly, my last night at Koh Samui would end after the swimming pool, but due to facts that feeling pity to another guy that did not manage to roam around the island nightlife, decided to accompany him to roam around the Chaweng nightlife, went into the Go-go bar, which for me Phuket's Go-go bar are way better than this, and end up at the Reggae Pub at Soi Reggae.

Went back hotel around 2:00am, exhausted....

More write up on the last day at Koh Samui after this...

Koh Samui - Free&Easy Ride (Part 4)

27-May-2016

We finally managed to check in our room around 5:00pm, and decided to rent scooter to roam around the island, instead of using our own bike. Scooter rental available at the hotel, but with slight high price @250baht/day.

After refreshing, decided to gather at the lobby around 6:00pm, to slightly explore the Chaweng, and food hunting for our tummy.... with the hot weather, after having our dinner, all of us are sweating heavily, and before we continue to hunt for the nightlife, all agreed to go back to hotel, clean up, and ready for the nightlife hunting.

We went back again to the Chaweng street, and previously i read that Soi Green Mango is equivalent to Soi Bangla of Phuket, but trust me, is not at all.... after hunting along the Chaweng beach, with most disappointed with the nightlife available there, we end up at Soi Reggae. The Reggae Pub at the end of Soi Reggae, I would rate it at 4.8/5 based on the live band performance.

But, I warn you, in order to arrive at this great place, you have to passby the Soi Reggae, which from my point of view, scary view alongside the road....

Hang out at the Reggae Pub till the liveband performance finish, around 2am, decided to have some supper, and head back to hotel to call it for the night.

Koh Samui - Free&Easy Ride (Part 3)

27-May-2016

After ~1.5 hours with the ferry, finally we arrived at the Koh Samui jetty, and next destination towards our hotel. During the planning stage, we had decided to stay at this hotel, Boonjumnong Modern Apartments.

http://boonjumnong-samui.com/

This hotel is more towards SOHO concept, the price and location is quite attractive (1,000 Baht/night)

Koh Samui - Free&Easy Ride (Part 2)

27-May-2016

All of us gathered at the carpark around 6:50am, and after few briefing, we departed from Hatyai around 7:15am.
During the planning of this trip, we already can foresee the group will be separate into at least 2 group, group "laju" and group "slow". Anyhow, we already briefed before departure that first pitstop will be around 150km from the hotel.
First pitstop, Phatthalung

After the first pitstop, the first group begin to slightly add more pressure on their throttle, and we decided to meet up only @ the jetty, not stopping at the same pitstop.

With much help from the Google Maps navigation, second group managed to arrive @ Raja ferry jetty around 10:50am, and no sign of the 1st group...

Even though there was ferry awaiting to go into Koh Samui, but without the fast group arrival, we decided to skip and wait for the next ferry. After almost 45mins of waiting, the fast group arrived. Their leader (which had been to Koh Samui almost 5 times) lost, and they had went for extra miles to arrive. Sadly to say, the ferry which previously awaiting, had sailed off, few minutes before their arrival, therefore, all of us (14 bikes) had no choice but wait for another 1hr for next ferry. (puihhh, kononnya geng laju, arrowhead pandai jalan siam, dah banyak kali sampai dah, sesat gak.... end up semua kena delay almost 2 hrs).

The cost of ferry ticket, for 1 rider + big bike is 230 Baht, and if with pillion, additional 130 Baht.

After much waiting at the jetty, finally we manage to board around 2:00pm....

The ferry journey took us 1.5 hrs, and decided to take a short nap....

Koh Samui - Free&Easy Ride (Part 1)

26-May-2016

For this free and easy ride, total participants slightly more than 20 person, with 14 bikes, and 2 cars...
Due to different working schedule, and the first night at will be free and easy as well, we had divided into 3 groups.

1st group, only me and another friend, decided to depart early, around 4:30pm (rushing to get duty free cigarette, as if not mistaken closed at 7:00pm).
2nd group, 6 bikes departed around 5:00pm, direct to Florida hotel, Hatyai.
3rd group, 6 bikes departed around 6:00pm, meet up with group 1 @ Danok.

Of course, after completed all the related documents at border, me and my friend decided to hang out around Danok, while waiting for the last group.

During having few drinks, the sky is not cooperate at all, the sky is crying. After waiting, and drinking, and waiting, and drinking, the last group arrived at border around 8:00pm (due to raining, and massive jam at border). 8 bikes departed to Florida hotel, Hatyai.
Arrived at Florida hotel around 9:00pm, checked in, refresh ourself, and went for dinner. If not wrongly remembered, the hotel cost us 690baht per night. Even though Hatyai full of attraction, but due to facts that we have to depart 6:00am (now I will use Thailand time), had to rest early after the dinner.

Koh Samui - Free&Easy Ride

Back from Koh Samui, after busy with the hands on task, and few video editing (of course with some laziness), till now only update via this blog.

Based on the first draft of maps/routing, we had decided to slightly changed the routing to mostly (70%) highway straight road.

As compared to previous, this route will cause us slightly 30~40km more, but easier to manage...

Due to the facts that we wanna catch up with the early ferry from DonSak, all decided to overnight at Hatyai, and depart the next morning. More write up after this...

Santai Ride to Koh Samui (Pre-ride)

After trip back from Phuket early of April, again, we have planned for next destination...
Few discussion, and referring to calendar, week 22, end of May 2016 is the start of school holiday... therefore, decided....

Have to do some homework before start our journey, as usual...

Thanks to Google Maps again, I had roughly plot the routing.

Further checking on the ferry schedule, which referred me to this site;
http://www.seatranferry.com/en/services/timetable.php

We decided to stay overnight at Hatyai, and depart the next morning, in order to board the ferry before noon. So, most probably the hotel in Hatyai will be Florida hotel.
http://www.floridahatyai.com/

In Koh Samui, alot of friends recommend to stay at Chaweng area, and found this good review apartment;

Phuket Bike Week 2016 (Part 4 - end)

9-April-2016, Saturday
Woke up around 10am, we are ready to go back, not enough time to really enjoy at Phuket due to short stay... For the return trip, we decided to follow Krabi --> Trang --> Phattalung --> Hatyai --> Danok

First stop after departing from hotel, some famous dim sum shop in Phuket, 7 person on our table, and we only ate ~50 basket of dimsum....

Around 12pm, we started our journey again, and next place, emerald pool, Krabi....

Entrance fee @ 200 baht, and u need to walk around 800m from the entrance to reach this first pool, and there is another blue pool ahead, with another 800m, but sadly it was closed at 3pm, we arrived there around 6pm....

Departed from this beautiful pool around 7pm, and with only 4hrs left before Msia border close, we have no choice but to overnight at Danok...

There's all for my first time long distant ride in Thailand, and looking forward for next ride....

Phuket Bike Week 2016 (Part 3)

8-April-2016, Friday
Woke up around 10am, and we gathered at the lobby again to decide the next destination (this trip was free and easy where no fix itinerary). After having lunch at nearby restaurant, we started our sight seeing.
The itinerary agreed was "some beach, Big Buddha, some port, etc"

Before we started our sight seeing, one of the bike having tire puncture, and there, the birthday boy aka the owner of the workshop, have to work even during the holiday trip.

With the rented scooter, first destination, some beach alongside the route...
Nothing much for me to snap photo, not much interesting sight.... but the sea water is crystal clear....
After stop for awhile, with few beers, we cont to the Big Buddha.
Bla bla bla.....

After the day sight seeing, we back to the hotel for some refreshing bath, and continue to the bikeweek on the evening...

Phuket Bike Week 2016 (Part 2)

8-April-2016, Friday early morning
Even though we arrived around 12am (Thailand time), after tiring ride from Alor Setar, but our heart told us, the night still young... Without further delay, after cleaned up ourself, few gather at the hotel lobby...
After few consideration on the traffic, our body tiredness, and safety of the parking, we decided to rent scooter, instead of taking our own bike. This hotel do provide scooter rental, @ 250baht/24hrs.
They allowed us to return the bike on the next midnight, why not...

After refueling at the roadside (not petrol station, only those kiosk selling petrol in bottle, cost us 40baht/bottle), we headed towards the beach, to confirm the location of bike week, which was located nearby the famous Bangla Road. After got our scooter parked, which cost us another 20baht, we went to explore bangla road, before hunting for food (remark, last proper meal eaten was noon, and only had bread during the break). There are lots of bar alongside the bangla road, with tonnes of chicks performing pole dancing, but i'm too hungry to enjoy those.

After filling our stomach, we start to explore again the bangla road...
Together with us, 3 single guy, and 2 married couple... my instinct told me, we have to separate from the married couple, in order to enjoy the nitelife of phuket..

At the middle of bangla road, there is one junction with 2 rows of shop facing each other, which those "go-go" pub located. Having some reading on such pub, we decided to separate from the married couple...
First pub we went was "Exotic", the waiters outside showing us only need to spend 99baht for a small bottle of beer, in order to enter the pub and enjoy the show, or you can choose to "test-view" it for few second before decide to enter... kindly refer the link to self-read further....
http://www.phuket.com/nightlife/go-go-bars.htm
Nightlife at bangla road end @4am (thailand time) if not mistaken....

In my next post, will have more details on the day trip, and bike week...

Monday 11 April 2016

Phuket Bike Week 2016 (Part 1)

7-April-2016, Thursday
Finally, the day been waiting so long....
It is consider as free and easy ride, as we only have 7 bikes for this trip...
To avoid long waiting time while queuing up for documents declaration, we had split into few smaller team, whoever able to depart earlier, will wait at the Danok McDonald, as some still need to work on Thursday morning.

Me departed with another 1 bike, around 1:30pm from Alor Setar, reached Malaysia passport control station, with no traffic. Noted that I had visited Thailand during Sadao Bike Week, and we had our documents prepared. Stopby Duty Free complex to get ciggy, and straight towards Thailand border for passport stamping. Maybe the time we arrived still early, not much crowd as well at their passport control.

First thing to do when completed necessary documents, walking distance of 50m or so, i stopby telephone shop to purchase Thailand simcard with data, it only cost 299Baht, one week usage unlimited (but i think sure after 1gb, they will capped). Then we proceed to Mcdonald to wait for the rest of the team.

Been waiting for so long (almost 1.5hrs), at last, all team members arrived, and without any further, we prepared to start our long journey, somewhere around 4:30pm.

we are ready to depart....

Having homework done ahead, we roughly know our route without GPS, as from Danok, we headed to Hatyai interchange, then turn left into Phattalung. According to planning, the first pitstop should be around 146km from Danok, and i'm leading the group... One thing i need to highlight here is, don't ever rely 100% on your speedometer, they never accurate as those information obtained from Google Map. I had miss the first pitstop, as the speedometer only shown me 135km (Google Map shown me 146km). Without more choice, we have to stop at any petrol station ahead.

First pitstop @ Phattalung

After some discussion during the break, we had came into conclusion that will use the prepared pitstop as reference, and not necessary to follow as planned, still, no GPS activated yet. ~30mins of rest, we continue our journey, towards next pitstop, Surat Thani. I'm glad that had chosen this route, as it was straight all the way towards Surat Thani, with minor roadwork. Anyhow, from Nakhorn Si Tammarat towards Surat Thani, the traffic become slower with only contra-lane of road due to roadwork, but still manageable. With the previous experience of mileage on speedometer not accurate, I put more effort to find the suitable pitstop. Anyhow, I still manage to arrive at the planned petrol station just before the junction.

Take note that from Danok, up till this petrol station, no GPS was activated, and now, is the time to activate it. Due to facts that we don't have proper GPS, here is why Thailand simcard is important. We use Google Map. According to previous planning, I will only lead up to this point, as i don't install handphone holder or any tank bag for me to place my phone. But one of my friend (the owner of the workshop) saying that he was using fullface helmet and is not easy to see the map, with the phone attached to tank bag, at the end, he insist to put his tank bag on my bike and ask me to activate my GPS. At this point, we have 3 Google Maps activated, and I choose to become sweeper.

After around 15mins of journey, i'm seriously feeling sleepy with the speed of the lead, with only average of 80~90kmh, on a nice curvey road, and due to fact that i'm equipped with the GPS, I've put more pressure on the throttle, and redeem back the lead position. As we already quite late (already night time), no more delay allowed. According to google, from Krabi to Phang Nga, there is one big U-turn, and after that left turn. I wasn't aware that there were 3 bikes at the back, still with slower speed (lead where can take care all), they miss out that junction and lost (noted that among the 3 last bikes, there were 2 GPS activated, and the front 5 bikes, only with 1 GPS on my bike).

After hilly road, once arrived at the junction, I stopby at the side of road, to wait all arrived (at this point, i still not aware that we had already separated into 2 group and the second group lost their way). After asking around, only the last person on the first group told that actually few junctions before, the 3 bikes already not within sight (holly shit)... After trying to call them, and wechat them, finally we received their updates, and still, after waiting for almost half hour, still no sight of them. After majority votes, we have decided to separate into 2 group and meet up at the hotel (as they have 2 GPS, we confident that they will have no problem to reach hotel). Even though is already late night, and tired with the travel (hot, sweaty, thirsty, hungry, sleepy), the route from Phang Nga towards Phuket is super delicious with tonnes of high speed cornering, but my rookie skill doesn't make me a pro corner tackler.

Finally, after so many hours (noted that i'm already start my journey around 1:30pm from Alor Setar), we reach Phuket town (not much of traffic, but road construction is still alot), we headed toward Patong beach, where the hotel located. Kindly take note that the route toward Patong beach is hilly and curvy, and put more care during the ride. We reached the hotel around 12:00am, The Stay@Phuket, nice and cozy hotel, and the owner is Malaysian.

All arrived safely

http://www.thestayphuket.com/index.html

Cozy feel inside the room, very clean

After quick shower, and the night was still young, we had continue our activities... and will be write more bout this on next post....

Phuket Bike Week 2016

It all started when "lepak-ing" at my friend workshop, bli-bla-ing bout holidays and ride trips...

photo from http://www.phuketbikeweek.com/

Forgot to mentioned, this is the workshop i always lepak, and can consider as the only workshop handle my bilke...
Western Bikers Gallery, at Jalan Kuala Kedah, just opposite Pei Hwa primary school.

So, back to the story, after hoo-haaa bout the trip, and discussion become more detail, finally is a confirmed trip, and the ride finalized on 7~9 April 2016.

After few discussion, we found out that only manage to start our journey from Alor Setar around 3pm due to some others still working on that morning. Based on estimation, we most probably to arrive at the hotel around midnight. So, to avoid further delay during the ride, e.g. lost, difficult routing (due to mostly night ride), and thanks to Mr. Google, I had finalized our routing.

Normally, the routing will be Hatyai --> Phattalung --> Trang --> Krabi --> Phang Nga --> Phuket
Due to facts that we mostly will counter night ride, and most of us are first timer to ride this route (me as well), I have not choose the normal routing. (they told me too many junction, quite hilly route as well).

I have chosen the routing Hatyai --> Phattalung --> Nakhon Si Thammarat --> Surat Thani -- Phang Nga --> Phuket, which based on Google Maps, this route mostly straight, and only ~20km extra from the normal routing. Also, to avoid any team member lost during the journey, I have briefly set the check points, and remark each distant in a little bit more detail.

Just to share some information on new implemented regulation in Thailand, in order to ride our own bike/vehicle in there, you will need the following documents prepared;
1- TM6, foreigner arrival/departure card
2- TM2 & TM3, new requirement, passenger list
3- Passport (of course)
4- Photocopy of your vehicle registration card
5- Authorization letter (In case the name on the vehicle registration card not same as the passport holder)
*For item 1 & 2, actually you can obtain this form FOC from Thailand immigration office, most people will just obtain it, with details filled at any kiosk alongside the road to border (of course with some charges)

Anyhow, I'm looking forward for the ride tomorrow, and will try to capture more photo during the journey.

Free & Easy Ride - TanYong Po, Satun

16th March 2016
Due to client shutdown, me and another 4 friends decided to have one day "free N easy" ride.
Previously we were planning to overnight at Betong for the famous sea of cloud sightseeing, but due to each other schedule, that plan was canceled, and replace with this one day ride.

RV at Hutan Kampung tols, as usual, I'm the first one to arrive

After around 8:30am, all arrived and we started our journey.
First stop, Changlun, to purchase Insurance, and some paperworks.
From there, we use the connecting highway towards Perlis, exit at Chuping.

Due to hot season recently, the scenery is not good at all, with fire spotted every now and then.
For the second time, I'm arrived at Wang Kelian Border, but is the first time to enter Thailand using this border.
With only 1 booth available, the waiting time is killing me...

After done with the immigration, headed to the custom office to declare my bike.
Am surprise that the officer told me, they can't issue me the documents, due to the fact that in their system, I'm not returning the documents last trip (30-Jan-16, Hatyai bikeweek). After checking my records of In-Out Thailand border, he told me just go in without declaration, and since I'm gonna exit at Sadao border later on, to check there.

After everyone done with their documents, we headed to Tanyong Po for lunch.
As first timer to arrive at Satun, I would say is not happening as Danok, nothing interesting for me to stay overnight.

Unfortunately, the road towards that restaurant undergo upgrading, and the condition is not very good.
Hot weather, pebbles road, and dusty, not easy for me to ride. Nevertheless, once we approaching the restaurant, the roadside view is very nice, riding along the coast line, with endless seaview, all those previous "off-road" riding paid.
photo from Google Maps

Lunch served at the wooden hut, and with this breathtaking endless seaview, the charges are not expensive.
Lunch for 5 only cost us THB1,200, not to mentioned free Kopi "O", black coffee from the owner, as my friends are regular customer.

After the lunch, and rest for some time, we continue our journey towards Hatyai, as they want to find some spare parts/accessories for their scooter. Few major outlet/shop in Hatyai should be ok for them, SIRI & XSpeed.

Bla bla bla, we finished at Hatyai around 7pm, and headed to Sadao border to "kap ban" aka go back Msia.
For them, a trip to Thailand will not complete without ice espresso from Amazon coffee, almost available at all PTT petrol station.

Journey continue after another break at Amazon coffee, and we reached Sadao around 8:30pm, dinner time... Had our dinner at Kak Jah, https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kak-Jah-Restoran-Danok/235300186500264, and headed to the immigration.

As mentioned before, during the custom declaration at Wang Kelian, their system mentioned that I had not return back the documents last trip, and need me to clarify/check at Sadao custom office. I'm very sure that I did return it, but my only worry is how to communicate well with the officers, most of them only speak Thais, and for me, I don't speak thais. Long story to elaborate, in briefly, after almost 1 hour waiting, the officer finally found the documents in their storage, but they forgot to key into their system.

Luckily this issue detected earlier, as if only detect during my next trip to Phuket bikeweek, not sure how much time will be taken then.

Finally, arrived back in Malaysia, and stop at Jitra tols for others to perform their prayers.
